Metabolix Has Record Loss As ADM Backs out Bio-Plastics Venture – NASDAQ:MBLX

stocks-51Metabolix Inc. (NASDAQ:MBLX), the Massachusetts producer of plant-derived chemicals, had its largest intraday drop after Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE:ADM) suddenly terminated a joint venture that made bio-plastics.

Metabolix, based in Cambridge, fell as much as 55% to $2.68 at 9:33 am in New York, the biggest loss since the company started trading in 2006.

The companies’ deal will end February 8 as its financial returns are “too uncertain,” Decatur, Illinois-based ADM stated in a statement yesterday. The company will dissolve Telles LLC, formed with Metabolix to sell the bio-plastic Mirel, whereas retaining an ADM factory in Clinton, Iowa, where the corn-based resin was made.

Metabolix didn’t anticipate the cancellation and will start evaluating options for commercializing its bio-plastics technology, including looking for a new partner, Chief Executive OfficerRichard Eno stated yesterday in a conference call.

Metabolix, Inc. (NASDAQ:MBLX) last session volume of 12.25million shares was lesser than its average volume of 0.208 million shares. The stock after opening at $2.60 hit high price of $2.83 and then closed at $2.54 by scoring -57.60%.

MBLX generated revenue of 1.10 million in the following twelve months and earned -$38.65 million. The Company showed a negative -3516.74% in the net profit margin and as well as in its operating margin which remained -3523.93%. Company’s annual sales growth for the past five year was -30.59%.

The MBLX past twelve months price to sales ratio was 78.76 and price to cash ratio remained 1.19. As far as the returns are concern, the MBLX return on equity was recorded as -97.03% and dropped -50.85% return on investment while its return on asset stayed at -46.56%.

The stock showed weekly downbeat performance of -50.58% which was maintained for the month at -43.81%. Likewise the negative performance for the quarter was recorded -43.93% and for the year was -75.05% while the YTD performance remained at -44.18%.
